Joe Freeley, pilot, professional driver and former athlete, now enjoys vaping menthol juice. The former two pack of Rothman a day man puffs on a couple of tubes of menthol juice a week costing him a tenth of his previous habit and he loves the clean fresh smell too.
‘I would never have thought about smoking menthol when I smoked cigarettes,’ says Joe. ‘But I find it surprisingly fresh and calming. I’ll never felt better and I’ll never go back.’
Joe was an upcoming sportsman as a young man, winning two All Ireland medals, and was poised for a sports scholarship in America until a sports injury ended his athletic career.
‘Instead I took to wine, women and song,’ he laughs. ‘That and smoking.’ And so he continued for twenty years.
Five years ago he managed to give up smoking but a chance encounter with a cigar put him back on the smokes.
‘I was disgusted and tried really hard to give up again but nothing worked,’ says Joe.
He experimented with e cigarettes but was discouraged by all the negative press about the contents. Then during the summer he read the UK report that said e cigarettes were 95 % less harmful and he knew he wanted to try again.
This time he was successful and has no desire to return to smoking. He enjoys not having the smell of cigarettes also – as a taxi and tour driver this is vital to his business.
‘A number of years ago I was reported for smoking in my taxi and the authorities vowed to fine me if I was caught again,’ says Joe.
‘Now I can vape legally in my taxi and there is no smell and no smoke. I love it,’ says Joe.
